It is dark grey to dark grey-brown above, with white barring, and off-white below, with distinctive dark v-shaped chevrons. The spellings of these words are not interchangeable; as we learned above, opossums and possums are different animal groups in vastly different regions of the world. If you ever want to avoid skunks, you do this by staying indoors at nighttime and away from areas they love, building borrows such as fields and woodland areas. I never see them but the damage is in the thousands and my maltese dog has injured leg and cant run. Many of our possums are dependent on tree hollows. Their bodies are covered in white or grayish hair. Yes they do have long periods of sleep during winter, but not true hibernation.
